If this were a just world, somebody would have challenged Rochester to a duel and he would’ve lost. Unfortunately, this is the world of Jane Eyre, so instead I am being forced to read passages in which this ALMOST 40 year old man is emotionally torturing his 18 yr-old employee to the point that she breaks out into tears. Why can’t men just propose like normal people? Why include the psychological torture aspect?

My poor Jane, I wonder how different your life would have been if you had met literally any other man before meeting Rochester. Made back some serious ground today to get make up for yesterday, I am now almost 50% of the way through! These couple chapters were fun, it was refreshing to hear Jane’s observations of the parties. Mr. Rochester on the other hand- negging + attempted emotional manipulation; 0 stars.

Read less than I liked today because I let myself get caught up in conversations, like always. Rochester, it seems, has a very annoying habit of over using the phrase “bye an bye”, can’t seem follow one train of thought at a time, is a very long winded storyteller, and my poor Jane has fallen into the age old habit of mistaking her romanticized attraction to power as affection for an old man.

Charlotte Brontë is a comedic master! The entire sequence of Jane and Rochester meeting for the first time with him falling right off his horse to him calling her a fairy in their first real conversation and her leaving that same conversation thinking he is an ugly weirdo had me amused from start to finish. This book keeps me so effortlessly entertained.

I have already gushed on what witty and entertaining protagonist Jane is so I won’t force you to hear another sermon! Instead let me take this update to compliment Charlotte Brontë on her truly impeccable ability to write such immersive descriptive detailed writing. Her description of the settings found in Jane Eyre are just so fantastic. They truly feel as though I am being engaged with all 5 of my human senses.

Jane is such a charming protagonist, I am only familiar with Emily of the Brontë’s work so I didn’t quite expect such a funny and witty narrator! Although to her credit, Lockwood and Nelly are very humorous story tellers so maybe that’s just on me.

im listening to the audiobook for this one and the narrator is lovely except he cannot do a south african accent to save his life. seeing as how this mystery features not only one, but TWO characters that have this particular accent you can imagine my listening dilemma.

743/1157 idk why the page count is so off on this one so i have to use the dreaded percentages tab i guess. finally finished book 2, murakami really does have this special hold on me because truthfully nothing really happened in this book, much like book 1, but i still found myself completely enamored with the world he built. shockingly (or unshockingly) aomone & tengo STILL haven’t found each other.

as it is now i struggle with being able to justify rating this book as anything over 3 stars. i’m delighted for all the people that truly learned something from this book and were transformed in some way but i cannot myself see why. the world building in this book is shockingly poor. lastly, i see no argument for categorizing this book as feminist which is a genre it so often finds in these days.
