none of this mean it's BAD, possibly it means that I am too dumb for a book with this much plot, but I am floundering and have been the entire time.

3/4 done and I don't even know how to phrase just how many different things I don't understand and can't follow for the life of me. Who killed who. Who's mad about it. What were we trying to do again. Why does it matter. Who has which keys and what does that mean. What does being emperor even mean. How does this world even work. HELP.

this book has a very muddled idea as to how it wants to communicate backstory.

i mean it's impressive that this is the first slog of ELEVEN WHOLE BOOKS but it's still, a Slog.

there is and isn't a lot of anxiety about the Categories in this one, but when you find that anxiety it's just painful, and you can see how it taps into the more transphobic corners of the community.

it's weird seeing the Categories being held up as sacred, and therefore marginalized, when their apparent sacredness relies on further marginalization (of trans people).
