This book feels unbelievably long and none of the characters are very endearing. Even the characters that are ostensibly good guys think some horrible shit. The story itself is OK but it doesn't really feel like I've GOTTEN to it yet

what initially seemed like exactly the kind of book ive been looking for (inclusive magical wild west!) is unfortunately ruined by the only gay characters so far being villains (and a weird metaphor set up that implies gay ppl are monsters and ALSO that their trauma isnt equal to the trauma suffered by people of color). Im gonna keep reading, but im not getting my hopes up for a change

i have been so disappointed by this book. The worldbuilding in this is extensive and interesting and there are many asides that tell stories from the world, but the main story is drawn so thin over the length of the book that I've been getting very bored with it. I might have enjoyed it more if the inciting incident in the book made any sense to me

I'm getting whiplash reading this. HE reveals that two of the main characters are bi and occasionally together, and overall serves up this tense atmospheric writing - but then there's BOOBS IN SPACE ARE DISTRACTING, AMIRITE FELLAS??

THEY WERE ON SEA ICE SEPARATED FROM LAND, WITH HORSES, SURROUNDED BY KILLER WHALES. I cannot stress enough how insane this story is

God this whole thing is filled with such tense moments and the guys are very rarely as worried as they should be. He's just described this scene where Scott goes sixty feet down into crevasse to rescue two dogs and add he's being hauled back up is talking about the improbable geological position of the crevasse. Both horrifying and charming.

"This is no more justified than the Moslems are in denying souls to women." Y I K E S. I understand this was written by a white dude in the sixties but still.

Intro: "throw metaphysics to the dogs." Like six pages in: " I dream of a hard and brutal mysticism in which the naked merges with a nonhuman world and yet somehow survives still intact, individual, separate." There sure is a lot of bullshit here and Idk if I can make it thru 200 pages of this.
