My enjoyment of this is 100% influenced by Joshua Waters narrating it.

I like that they’re using their public library.

murakami + bulgakov + poland

“…and then he disappeared behind a crimson curtain with one last flash of his snow-white shorts, imports from the U.S.S.R.” This book is awesome.

back in the fucking building (deep interest in communist era poland)

I can already tell that this book would be next to impossible to get through if you don’t know anything about Polish history.

“I was flabbergasted. Has the old man not heard of inflation? Prices nowadays are tens if not hundreds of times what they were before the war. Can he seriously believe that twenty yen from thirty years ago is the same as twenty yen today? It seemed so absurd that even I was affronted by it.” Lol.

Heartbreaking: a book you bought with your own money is bad 💔

Fuckkkkkkkkkk Meep is going to show up, aren’t they? Just kick me while I’m down.

Either I am the greatest detective of all time or I am going to look like a complete fool because the mystery feels so obvious to me rn

“I love the shade and the shadow, and would be alone with my thoughts when I may.” RIP Dracula you would have loved the emo music scene of the early 2000s

"...one being Slovak and the other Servian for something that is either were-wolf or vampire. (Mem., I must ask the Count about these superstitions." I bet Bram was giggling to himself writing this.

I understand Plot Reasons but girl you CANNOT being printing out someone’s library checkout history and using it as evidence. Ethics!!!!

I like that Tamar has an MLIS

Trying out this new thing where I actually try to read the books I own

I feel like Boo Boo the Fool because I like the characters, but oh my godddddd this book is just scene after scene with no clear plot. Every time I think I've discovered the A-plot, they just go off on another adventure for a little bit that leads to nowhere.

it's time to feel something again

magical cheese emporium mention

So comforting that this entire book hinges on the fact that she believes the US will take one of two paths: “The State” (1984) and “everything dissolves into territorial factions with their own militias.” Like, yeah probably

“I didn’t want to go to Ohio, I wanted to be at my desk.” Hey now

Going to be honest… it’s not holding my attention right now

Now why does he have to have horns...

full of dread atm

I don’t think I can read near-future science fiction anymore because it just starts to feel like a bad omen after awhile

I get her

As a passport agent, I’m really trying to figure out how her illegal passport scheme is supposed to work

I would never let Pittsburgh take over the Great Ohio Republic

2031 is a little too near-future for me, but objectively hilarious that this is the second book I have started this month where California becomes its own country.

romance as the subplot >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> romance as the main plot
