It’s picking up again after the long ass middle section on the history of the Mayfair witches.

The pedophilia is uncomfortable, but I can see how Rice could frame it in the context of how she talks about expressing her deepest most taboo desires in her novels (i.e. she wants to be a little girl with a Daddy). The treatment of slavery and racism is also uncomfortable, and not in a “it was a different time” way, but in a “Rice did it in a cringey racist” way. Also it’s excruciatingly long.
