Also, what's with the arsonist being portrayed like a Batman villain? Who gives himself villainous moniker like the Phoenix?

I'm sorry, but this book is maddeningly avoidant of telling the police even when this arsonist could have been caught by now if they'd just shared what they knew with people who are trained to arrest arsonists. Sometimes, overly ambitious kid crime fighters need to remember that they're not the best person for the job.

I'm really enjoying this. Why isn't there more fuss about this book?

Well, the Magister is living up to his knock off Dumbledore reputation pretty well, in much the same way that Bizarro is knockoff Superman, and I'm trying hard not to believe that the whole series isn't just Inkheart fanfiction, but I'm going to keep at it.

I'll be honest. There's a lot I like about this book, from the characters to the narrative style, but these ghost investigations make absolutely no sense whatsoever. I understand that they are suspenseful and entertainingly creepy, but for what? Seems like a lot of the most effective counteractive actions they take would be better done during the day when the visitors are inactive. No weapons needed. Just a hot fire.

I can't help but get the feeling that something terrible is about to happen every time they enter a new room. There always seems to be some terrible historical event occurring at the time that the room is connected.

I have to say, I think war between Artimé and Quill seems like a lazy climax for this story. Certainly, the scene could be action-packed and could bring resolution to a lot of the plotlines, but for a world built on creativity and brilliance, war seems lackluster and thoroughly uncreative. It just seems lazy.
