This book feels highly unfocused. It's primarily a memoir, with some dense (and frankly dry AF) French feminist philosophy? But it's marketed as history, which is baffling. Unironically less than 1/3 of this book is historical.

This is such a strange book. It's like 25% history (which I wanted) and 75% memoir/self-psychoanalysis, and I'm really not feeling it.

I'm already pretty sure I'm going to hate this book.

Margaret Rogerson isn't an anime fan, is she? Because I can't help but notice the similarities between Nathaniel + Silas and Ciel + Sebastian from Black Butler. Similar demon names, both being bound to their masters as butlers, both starting their contract when the human is 12, some kind of physical mark symbolizing the contract on the character's face (Nathaniel's hair, Ciel's eye). It's just... a lot.
