In chapter 4 he says no herbivores have to go to extremes to get b12. Except I’m pretty sure that rabbits get b12 by eating their own poop, which is something humans could also do but choose not to. I think I’m done with this guy

I’m in chapter three and I’m not convinced this guy knows what he’s talking about. He just said ACL injury is a uniquely human problem that doesn’t happen in other animals. Which is only technically true because dogs don’t have an anterior cruciate ligament - they have a cranial cruciate ligament and CCL tears are pretty common (especially in athletic dogs).

I gave this book 9 chapters but nothing has grabbed me. The world building is stilted, the characters aren’t intriguing, everything has taken way too long to get anywhere.
This book was billed as Firefly meets Murderbot and I don’t see anything of either.

This first chapter is how you stay a book. Damn

Bunch of familiar anti-science republicans suddenly really into “trusting the science” when it comes to executing poor people and people of colour. Greg Abbott and Jeff Sessions just showed up, joining Rick Perry and George Jr. I’m guessing Ted Cruz will be other next chapter

The familiar names involved in prosecuting or falsely imprisoning all these junk science cases - Nancy Grace, Rick Perry - are both concerning and not at all surprising.

Saying Sackler convinced a museum to let him reimburse them for a painting us a really kind way of saying that he paid a museum to put his name on a painting he had nothing to do with

There’s something slightly disconcerting when the narrators kiwi accent is better than the writers kiwi dialogue (it’s not horrendous but a few too many Australian-isms but maybe that’s how people from the Chatoms speak)

Wish this book had been a bit longer - clearly so much more that could be explored. The lack of curiosity of Trumps team is just astounding.

We respect two (2) economists. The other is Joan Robinson.

Having never known anything about Keynes but the whole ‘spend your way out of a depression’ finding out he was part of some bohemian artist commune was kinda surprising. Also this guy basically predicted the rise of nationalism in Germany and Italy following WWI making him the one (1) economist who knows what the f*ck he’s talking about.

Not sure what’s the correct way to defend racists, but “he’s probably more sexist than racist” isn’t it.

The uncomfortable feeling of knowing I’m going to give this book a bad rating less than a chapter in. I hate this style of non-fiction writing. The first chapter is like a recipe blog if you just replace Nona with outback Australia.
I am interested in the topic and a favourable audience that basically agrees with the thesis, and I’m going to hate it if every chapter starts with filler.

Was about to accuse the writer of being a man because they considered ‘not wearing a bra’ to signal that someone is overly sexualised.

tbh, I don't really care if the Sackler's were terrible people in their personal lives. It almost humanises them and I am not here for that.

This book has helped me understand why I hate most psychology books. I lol’d when he suggested Gladwell ever had integrity.

Did Phyllis Schaefer ghost write chapter 12?

The analysis in this book is annoyingly shallow. Doesn’t seem to consider that the legislative and judicial activism against unions could maybe have something about the quality of jobs that used to be good jobs

I think I have a fundamental disagreement with the premise of this book. Case says capitalism is a good and we don’t need to tax the profits of companies that that have been writing the rules in their favour. But if those profits are ill gotten, shouldn’t we take the profits and change the laws?

This book is so poignant right now. Like he literally calls out Pfizer in one chapter for calling trials early to put a positive spin on things.
