even at the cusp of destruction framing the relationship between colonized and colonizer as “walking in the streets with Dutch and Javanese amiably smiling at one another given the restful Sunday activities” (paraphrased quote) - it’s just insane how the frame is solidly stuck on the Dutch were bad colonial masters but nothing was wrong until after krakatoa erupted!

I’m lost. There’s a few storylines that we’re following in each new chapter. i want to say that this is one of those broken timelines where the past, present and future are being presented in a non-chronological. i’m a bit lost.
