This is a very informative book, if a bit more academic than I expected. While the title and subtitle imply a close focus on Hillis and her bestseller, many chapters range far afield, focusing on other prominent single women, the nightlife of Prohibition-era New York (a surprisingly dry chapter (I swear that pun wasn't intentional)), etc. I am glad I'm reading this but not as engrossed as I expected.
