Just finished the first book - The pace picks up a little finally in the last third. In fact it just accelerates until everything is happening at once and incredible fast. And then slam, its over. The whole book seems to be set in a 3-4 week period... I'm still annoyed the geography is so off and entire mountain ranges can be crossed in 4 hours... And that the second book in the "trilogy" is barely related.

Oh and how has the date on a cornerstone from 2,000 years ago not weathered away? Or the steel substructure not corroded away?

The geography of the book is absolutely awful. The can travel 25% of the world in 3 days and gain and lose "miles" of elevation in 24 hours. What a joke...

Also the whole "gnomes, dwarfs, trolls and humans evolved from common stock 2,000 years ago after an apocalypse destroyed the knowledge of a formerly advanced economy" seems pretty weak. What does sprinkling in the bit about how the world was industrialized add?
