Rayya turns her back on her sober friends, who are shocked, upset, angry, betrayed.
The narrator, writing her memoir, is walking on eggshells; trying not to be seen to be judgemental of Rayya. Her reaction at the time, is to overlook Rayya's transgressions, to justify them on Rayya's behalf.
The narrator, after Rayya's death, reads Rayya's diaries. Rayya was drinking alcohol years before the reverse intervention.
