A very good read. Buckley uses historical research as the basis for a rollicking and irreverent tale. A dealer in relics who is caught in a swindle must switch the "real" shroud of Christ for a fake prepared by Albrecht Durer. It's a great adventure told with humor and suspense

Farell is such an impressive writer, able to combine tragedy and comedy in great story telling. This is the first in his Empire seris and is set on a massive, crumbling hotel on the Irish coast. The Major and other residents strive to achieve civility and normalcy as the building is taken over by multiplying cats and greenery which , fertilized by some sewage isuue, is breaking through the superstructure.

I really enjoyed this book. Set primarily in East Africa as the European war broke out in 1914, Boyd traces the fate of several characters as they get caught up in the confusion of combat among German and BrIrish colonialists fighting with native troops. The protagonists fight with varying motivations and levels of commitment. The narrative has hilarious satire as well as moments of horror. It is well written.
