Is it just me, or is the story exactly like Jamaica Inn???

I'm not very far in, but there are a couple things that have already made me scratch my head and wonder whether the author has ever lived in California. I looked it up and the author is Canadian...so probably not.

The illustrations by Jan Pienkowski are lovely. Everything is in silhouette and it makes them look more timeless.

"'Which Mr Morris, sir? We have three Mr Morrises!' It was obviously the lady's favorite joke. She said 'sir' nastily, like a dog snarling. 'Any Mr Morris ye've got lyin' aboot handy, hinny!' The lady flared her delicious nostrils, obviously thinking that being called 'hinny' was tantamount to rape." Yikes! I am not loving the misogyny in this children's book. It runs deep, here.

I don't love YA dystopians, but I'll try this out since it's by the great Chris Priestley! :] I realized this will be the 9th book I've read by him!

Not liking this so far. It seems very amateurish. And I'm like 10% in and I'm pretty sure I've already figured out the ending. I got it from NetGalley so I'll try to finish it, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So far I'm really liking this. It's basically a YA Twin Peaks meets Fargo.
