I wasn't sure how I was feeling about this book until about 1/3 of the way in when it really hooked me

Like this doesn't feel like a sprawling story of time and space! Why? Because they keep talking like joss whedon characters! They keep saying making unsubtle references, and using metaphors that seem clumsy. Page 32 - "once, horsemen broke on fortifications like waves against a cliff. (most of these men have not seen waves, or cliffs, but travellers bear stories from distant lands)." like is this even good writing?

I also don't like how I can't tell the difference between red and blue. At the intro, blue is clandestine, conniving, flirtatious. Red is covered in viscera and concerned of the illicitness of their contact. But then as soon as contact is established, red becomes as sarcastic, flirty and dry as blue, and stops showing any misgivings of their contact. They feel like the same voice. Ugh

Only 32 pages in but I regret spending $22 on this. I don't like the style. I don't like the millennial coded pithy quippy referential-ness. My personal pet-peeve is feeling like I cannot immerse in a story because they keep jarringly bringing me back to ham-fisted meta and too many references to things that I cannot suspend my belief to accept - strand 6 nineteenth century literature. Quips about Toronto sucking?

FitzSimons' writing is as engaging and full of personality as always. However the lingering descriptions and leery tongue in cheek comments about the Tahitian women's sexuality became gratuitous in the first quarter of the book. I get it, they were fucking. It feels like it fetishises the women and their culture, rather examining the arrangement with nuance.
