Ok so having given myself permission to skim and read for themes I feel very confident that the author is doing something meaningful and interesting artistically with the prose while conveying the themes which I respect, but still hate the experience of reading

I understand that the author is trying to do something but that something involves every chapter being one very long sentence with no line breaks or quotation marks for dialogue and I’m reading this for a book club so I don’t have the option to dnf and I am hating the experience of trying to parse this prose so much

Just one of the greatest books so good I had to put it down for a minute and pick up something stupid

I’m Tolstoy I’m a genius I’m on page 1000 doing algebra to prove it doesn’t matter if napoleon is smart or if he’s stupid bc war is about more than one guy

Genuinely did not expect Tolstoy to be taking a strong stance against great man history. We love to see it.

I’m still not sure if Cahan is a character to me or more of a vessel for the story but I’m having a great time

This book is so good. It’s truly a rarity for me to want to put a book down every few chapters just so I can sit with the feelings of it bc I’m such a read for the plot girlie at heart and that’s how I feel. Every few chapters I put the book down and just sigh because it makes me laugh and feel and makes my brain itch in the best way.
