He makes it sound like winter in Chicago is the North Pole... except he was there in mid-March, which is still cold, but hardly winter. I see online that there was a bad blizzard on New Years, but this just gives me an idea of the level of exaggeration there is here.

Can't find a reference to any 'black flag' districts online. There's a yahoo answers post where some Bahrainis claim there's a cultural / religious reason behind hanging black towels unrelated to Americans.

It seems more likely that American military were told to stay away from these places for reasons of cultural sensitivities- which they can sometimes be terrible at respecting.

So far the plot shows some interesting elements which are compelling enough for met o keep going, but I've just read 500 pages and I feel like I've just had a tasty foot-long sub for lunch and strangely remain unsatisfied with the quantity consumed.

So far a lot of commentary about Charlie by those closest to him, but it's nice as I find solace in his eccentricities. Makes me think that if I were richer people would tolerate mine a little more :P

This book started out so slowly, that I was seriously afraid of having wasted my time on another dull fan favorite. The excitement creeps up on you insidiously, however, and before you know it you can't put the book down. Great fun!
