This book has endless examples of a guy saying "I'd do anything for her!! I love her she's amazing" but whenever DeeDee gives him actual instead or asks him to READ THE GODDAMN MANUAL he's like "ugh stop bothering me I could possibly be bothered to pay attention when you talk to me." It's believable writing, I just hope there is character growth eventually.

Great so far, but one annoying thing...

MC - bitches and moans about not being told 100% of the information that can get people killed, in an environment where people exist who can read your thoughts or memories by touching you

Someone asks her a pretty simple question: "How dare you ask me about myself!?!"

The author's description of the conflict in the Congo is purposely obtuse when it blames "centuries old rivalries" and intrinsic tribal brutality for the horrors there instead of well-known systematic atrocities by King Leopold of Belgium. Obviously The Disappearing Spoon is not a deep dive of colonialism, but the author's gross mischaracterization took away much of his credibility for me.

Holy Jesus this book is stupid

This is my second Bridgerton book, and one mark of Julia Quinn's mediocre writing is that she does a lot of "telling" and not a lot of good "showing." She has to simply tell the reader if a character is witty or funny because she can't write well enough for readers to figure it out ourselves.

She is SO. STUPID.

In addition to the MC being pretty much garbage, there is a scene where a guy tells her that he has been wanting to rape her (he uses the word "enjoy") for months but he didn't so her "high lord" won't kill him later. And pretty much the only reason for him to say that is to make sure the MC knows she's sexy? What the everliving fuck SJM??

The main character is SO STUPID. As a person. She is such a dumb bint it's embarrassing

I’m enjoying the story. However, the story isn’t well structured; seems like the author has a lot of growing to do in terms of how to pace the story

The author is just making up new mechanics half way through the story. I get that each book is a new “system” and therefore new mechanics will be introduced, but the gimmicks being introduced have nothing to do the the “dungeon” system (maybe 10% of the book so far focused on a dungeon ENTRANCE) and are just things the author thought would be neat. A little frustrating. Book 2 was way better

6 more... The idea that an old man is going to defend himself against vampires with a kitchen knife is asinine

1 page later... I just realized; when Philippe died in 1945 Matthew drank all of his blood, so he should have learned all about Philippe meeting Diana in 1590. The time travel logic and vampire powers are WILDLY inconsistent and I hate it.

15 pages later... Apparently Philippe's blood vow "sings" loudly, but not one of the vampires mentioned in for 7 months in the last book? Sure. Harkness is just making shit up as she goes along and her editor doesn't notice orb doesn't care.

9 pages later... Gallowglass is a vampire capable of great speed and cunning; he deftly stalks men and all great beasts! But apparently he can't catch a boar? Inconsistent.

Everytime some one tells Matthew he "isn't a killer" I start yelling at the book. He's a VAMPIRE. He KILLED LOTS OF PEOPLE. Why insist he not kill people actively threatening his family??? What is even the point of his protectiveness/ blood rage?

Melodramatic, trite, and inconsistent. The main characters are selfish, stupid, and hypocritical.

Diana is more concerned with herself at the loss of her aunt-in-law than comforting Sarah, who has lost the love of her life; she just yells about how this isn't real and for Matthew NOT to comfort her aunt. Self-centered bitch. Matthew is angry that someone fell in love who he to thinks shouldn't have. SERIOUSLY BRO??

The sheer fucking hubris and pointlessness of going to the land of the dead... Also, Lyra's so focused on talking to Roger because she was responsible for his death, but she doesn't seem terribly concerned with everyone wanting her and Will to go to Asreal even though HE LITERALLY KILLED ROGER.

Reminds me how cringey high school was

I am so tired of the cliched "Good-guy-best-friend-in-the-friendzone" trope. Blech, the main character is the person we should all strive not to be. He's not caring or sensitive: he's selfish, and he only cares about the girl in relation to himself. When the girl is incommunicado or going through hard times he does not care about her being in pain, only how it might benefit him.
