I read this book for the first time in 1986 when I was studying Children’s Literature. It has remained a favorite.
I picked it up again today to read again as an older adult. I’m already transfixed. I’m also so pleased to see my own study notes penciled in on the flyleaf!

Oh god.
All I want to do now is call Chloe and talk to her about what happened on page 385…
She‘d understand my devastation.
Maybe that’s a spoiler alert.

But I do love this book.

I get it Chlo. I really do.

That’s what this book is like.

I love the conversational style so far.

Poetry.
Pure poetry.
I remember why I loved it, even at 16.

This was on my Year 11 Australian Literature reading list and I remember loving it then (though I was the only one in the class who did!).
Reading it now as an adult with different eyes.

I love this book so much.
The imagery!
Non-linear, concept-driven.
I pause to think and contemplate, find myself saying, “Yes” quietly to myself.

The imagery in this novel is taking me away to other worlds.
Beautifully written.
