Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men
Almost a quarter through and I'm becoming certain this book is a miscellany, it does not appear to be in conversation with contemporary thought on gender, justice, and the role of tech and bureaucracy on perpetuating bias. There are a lot of notes and references but the prose and structure is like an extended feature article.

In the sandwich of my feminist reading, this book is probably going to be the lettuce. It has an easily appreciated visual appeal, and a crunchy outrage texture. But I suspect in 10 years if I exhume the takeaway burger of my reading list circa 2012-2022, I'll be like "what are these weird green bits, mould? Oh, no, it's just popular white feminism during the late classical British transmisogynist era."

Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting Paperback – November 29, 2005
I'm reading the unrevised 1982 version and I sincerely hope the revisions took out the ableist advice in chapter 3 to consider giving your character a physical disability that highlights/echoes their personality D:

This is my experiment to see if I'm one of those who can only read plague stories during the literal plague. Because clearly the historical romance escapist stuff is not doing it for me at this time.

Thank you Brisbane City Library for doing what the combined might of the Commonwealth territories publishing industry could not, namely getting this book into my hand so I can put it in front of my Australian-based eyeballs.

Yes ok I'm starting on the third book in the series but there's so little tension in this set up that I'm not invested in this relationship at all. Did all the character development happen in the other couples' books already? :(

I distinctly recall plucking this in hardback from a library shelf, reading the blurb, and thinking no, I can't handle that level of emotional resonance at this time. Luckily I have found the optimal emotional distance reading the ebook version while I'm in transit in Japan.

Ah good old Mr Francis, always willing to lend his wand of truth to investigate the situation when Emma requests his input. (Reader, I admit that I sniggered, and highlighted the passage for later sniggering again.)

Yeah, thank goodness Anne never has to speak to Captain Wentworth again now that one awkward unavoidable encounter is over, phew! (I'm being sarcastic sorry, actually it's heaps better reading this the second time around knowing the deliberate narrative decisions leading up to the first time Anne actually has a line of dialogue attributed to her.)

Emma: I'm not loose and I don't care if anything thinks my behaviour is loose, because my heart is pure and my behaviour is unimpeachable.
Also Emma: I'm only corresponding with these unmarried men and writing them love letters because I desperately need the intellectual stimulation of education

The Dead Man is confirmed as my favourite sell-sword/bisexual disaster, obsessed with his favourite Adam Ant red coat with the fancy embroidery, getting awestruck by a fantasy sorceress Amy Winehouse, and then shortly afterwards unexpectedly finding himself holding hands with a wizard.

I'm not saying there's nothing else in the world that makes a painful train journey great except a Belinda book but recent history suggests it's very effective. The two-hour commute did not feel like two hours while I was reading about how good Marcus looks in a suit, damn him.

I remember being miffed as a teenager at Microsoft Word's grammar checker underlining everything in blue, tutting at me about 'sentence fragments' in my (obviously amazing) creative writing. Anyway, the worm turns and now I'm the one getting upset at full stops where in my heart I really feel it could have just been a comma. It's so punchy I've practically got two black eyes.

I'm not feeling the adventure, I think because I can't grasp the stakes. Mia needs to find a valuable thing, any thing, as long as it's valuable. She has a rough idea of where the things are. So far the book has listed one object of value scavenged from any planet, and it's an alien battery. What else is valuable and why? NFI. I am too fond of material culture to endure being left in the dark here. Inform me!!!

"Ah, good," said Arthur and relaxed. He had no idea what that was all about, but at least it seemed to be over. It wasn't.
