Hypothetical tags if this was a fanfic of The Terror on AO3: AU - time travel, reverse isekai, self-insert OC but please don't leave, slow burn, "and they were roommates", hurt/comfort, plot-heavy, body horror for later chapters, we stan a victorian woke king

I really want credit for the hundreds of thousands of words of self-indulgent fanfiction I've been reading over the past two months

Is it you or is it me, Erin Morgenstern? Because I just... don't care. About anything happening in this book.

Will try to make it to 100 pages but Lord is this a slow burn. Also some dramatic irony, which for some reason causes me almost physical pain.

They had heard the teacher coming and shut the door, and a thin ray of light had come slanting through the jamb, illuminating the handle of a cart filled with folding chairs--forty or fifty of them, stacked together in a long, tight interdigitation.

I have been much too busy binge-watching Lucifer to actually read books, let alone new books.

There's a scene around this point with a cat and a deer and it is a testament to the author's dark and twisted thinking. I don't know how I feel about it other than mildly nauseous.

Almost dropped this fifty pages in but glad I stuck with it! However, now I am reminded that I am actually a big baby when it comes to horror and I am more a fan of "ooooh spooky" atmosphere rather than gut-churning tension.

"...I taste the caustic cream of anticipation foaming at the tip of her tongue just as surely as she feels the tangling of my veins into a bloody bouquet."

This fucking book, I don't like the writing but I want to know if I'm right about the twist.

No sight of a mystery so far, just some hurt-comfort Sherlock Holmes expy fanfic. Don't hate it, just wondering where the plot is and whether I got the ebook on sale or not.

"The yearning inside her was impossible, like when as a child she'd wished to pluck a shooting star from the sky; it was wildly familiar and new at the same time. And she didn't want it; she could recognize a fool's errand even if she could not name it."

I have been carrying around this book and making zero progress for at least a full week--dutifully putting it in my backpack in the morning, taking it out at night, placing it carefully on my nightstand, only to repeat the process again the next day.

Part of that is having had a cold, I'm sure, but despite being really interested in this book I am just not getting into it.

You. Guys. I DO WHAT CANDACE DOES. Mostly. We do the same kind of job. So when the author uses generic business-speak instead of jargon, I can go, I KNOW WHAT SHE'S TALKING ABOUT AND SHE'S CALLING IT THE WRONG THING.

Is this how doctors feel watching medical dramas? Because there's a certain headrush to feeling like a professional insider and it's lovely.
