I’ve never had things explained to me in this unhinged of a tone before, but I’m really enjoying it 😂

So far, still in the fun 'parsing out book/movie differences' stage; but this is doing a good job of building up a mood, so far. It's unsettling, which is fun.

I think the thing I like about these books it the constant sense of the vast-ness of the world? Even though the actual span of the books so far is fairly small, it's teeming with creatures and characters. It's so much fun to read.

My hopes that this isn't a permadeath book are slowly dwindling, but this mystery is getting GOOD.

"Sometimes! You need! Eyeballs!"

Okay, but this is hilarious? I don't really like London that much so far, but this worldbuilding and pacing have GOT me.

Not that Dara's a good guy by any means, but Manizheh treating him the way she does is really, really sad.

I'm really impressed by how Chakraborty creates a political climate by making sympathetic characters, running in different circles, see different elements as 'the problem'. Everyone has to realize that the situation isn't as simple as they think. Everyone has to calm down and talk. It's a really cool and complex model to use in a story, and I'm impressed.

This is like a train wreck. I can't look away. How on Earth did the line "I'm the master now. You have to do what I say," survive to the point of publication? Did no one read that and think 'hey maybe that's kinda creepy'?

Ohhh, okay, Mr. Knight. So, your situation is SO desperate that you couldn't NOT gut those bad guys without landing yourself in mortal peril, but you do have enough leeway to not use guns because they're 'inelegant'. O-kayyy.

Okay, but what kind of ritual can we perform to do away with the ' mentor kills bad guys without remose, hero has problems with this, mentor coldly explains that his actions are Right and Moral and the hero shouldn't have any problems with them' trope? It's a really stupid conflict to include and never fails to make me mad and kinda queasy.

"you want to marry a man who doesn't respect you?" Dara asks, while trying to strong-arm Nahri into yet another decision without providing her with such necessities as facts, or considering her goals.

Re: Nahri's goals, though, really all this girl is trying to do is a) survive and b) be a doctor and help people, which is a really awesome motivation for a protagonist.

Dara is a really fascinating and fun character, but holy cow, is he a terrible, terrible person right now.

Also I'm super invested in everyone's arcs, but I am itching for someone to do something, anything, about all the ridiculous injustice going on in Daevabad (without, like, starting a riot or talking about genocide as a serious option).

Sometimes you just gotta listen to a book where the villains are named things like Carcass Skulk.

I love how entirely wrong-footed Kaladin is all of a sudden! It's hilarious but also kinda heartbreaking that he keeps expecting something to go terribly wrong. Dalinar's a good dude, my guy. You can trust him!

I've progressed from having some issues with Kaladin's dad to actively hating the man. He tries so hard to live up to his own sense or morality that he somehow manages to be self-righteous while a) stealing from a kind old man b) not providing for his family c) contemplating murder??? His character is so well thought out and self consistent, I've never seen the like before, but oh gosh I cannot STAND him.

I'm usually leery of immortal/mortal romances, cause they get weird real fast, but this is actually super sweet?
Also, so far Hannah West has done an excellent job of using subterfuge as a plot device without letting the miscommunication go so far as to be frustrating. It's a beautiful job of measuring tension, and it's a really fun story!
