Ah, 18 year old lady dragon scholar and scrappy islander orphan ex-whaler all in one. I like it. Writing is good, world is built well. And of course, Dragons and tall ships.

Already continuity errors. Aurora tells Tom the sea is impassable and the only way there is magic. Two pages later Tom is on his way to the shore to hire a boat bc Aduro is too weak to magic him to the shore. What?

Well there's a little stab of memory for me in this book too, as her boyfriend tells her she often smells like rotted plants because her house does. I'd once been told I sometimes smelled bad, and in retrospect it was probably due to the dust and thick smoke of my parents house.

The description says she was raised by "survivalists" but it would be more accurate to call them Paranoid Religious. A desire to survive without the government was only a symptom. Fear of Illuminati? Skin above the ankle is immodest? Dancing in a leotard in a sin?

Why is there a picture of the Canyon Diablo Crater, in Arizona, in the section talking about Chicxulub? Chicxulub is under the south end of the Gulf of Mexico. I understand wanting to include your own photo of a meteor creator, but the caption needs to note its a different meteor. Otherwise it's misleading.

This is a lovely book. My husband was against reading it until he actually read it. He is afraid of the kids knowing about war, but this introduces the struggle of real children they know. It teaches empathy and courage. I love it.

The entire first hour of the 2002 edition is a forward, and I've just now begun the actual first chapter. I'd be interested to read a forward of an edition published in 2024 or 2025, after this current siege from Israel.

When a character in 1984 says "One of these days, [the New England Patriots are] going to get the right guy under center, and when they do, they’re going to win so many Super Bowls that the entire country will hate them.” So of course, 2002, 04, 05 15, 17, 19. "The Patriots hold the records for most Super Bowl wins (6, tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers), appearances (11), and losses (5, tied with the Denver Broncos).
