I really enjoy the way John Green writes - it’s a good mix of informative without being overly weighty or intense. I enjoy that he pulls in moments of levity and humor in a book dealing with such a sad subject.

It’s kind of a weird juxtaposition in this book where it seems like this kind of thing (the long walk itself) would be something from a very dystopian novel (almost hunger games-esque), but there’s a lot of very normal/modern things mentioned in the backstory that make it seem less dystopian, which kind of re-emphasizes the question of why are they doing this?

The pacing of this book is very interesting, I think probably meant to emulate the action of the walk.

I’m reading this for book club, and I was excited to read something Stephen king, since he’s such a well know writer.
I do think the concept is very interesting, and I’m intrigued to see where it goes.
However, I really do not like the main characters inner monologue, especially the way he thinks about / talks about women.

I kind of wish I was reading this without the context of knowing it’s a vampire story, but I am enjoying it nonetheless. I just feel that would make the buildup more effective.

Very interesting description and imagery surrounding WWII from the Japanese perspective. The family dynamics are very interesting. Im now a quarter of the way through the book and I’m intrigued by where the plot might be going.
