My current prediction is that Walt Gordon is Frances’s killer. My evidence is:

1. Annie doesn’t suspect him.
2. He had access to the Gravesdown estate.
3. He dated Emily and could be the father of her baby.
4. He’s the executor of the will.

I don’t have any idea who killed Emily, but I think John in the linchpin. My guess is we won’t meet him till the very end and he will lead us right to the killers.

I’d like to reiterate that this author thinks I’m dumb. Immediately after anything of importance happens, the author/ Annie/ Frances (from the past) will vocalize what I should have noticed and why.

Examples: the flowers in the library, her interaction with Dr. Owusu, playing chess with Ford, etc. I also clocked these as important, but so did the characters. It cheapens the experience. Just zip it, sheesh.

How do I put this nicely? So far, I can tell this is the author’s debut adult novel after primarily writing children’s books. There’s a lack of subtlety in some of the writing that makes me feel like she assumes I’m dumb.

The premise is also full of clichés, which the book does try to acknowledge by poking fun at itself.

With that, if I don’t figure out the murder before the end, I’ll eat my words.
