I don’t understand the critiques? So far this has been a journey into understanding the need to start with ones lifestyle and environment, with each study and interaction presented from the viewpoint of “it was thought at the time”

Culture is what we encourage, as much as what we permit.

People don’t do what they are told, they do what we let them get away with.

Now the observations in better engagements are coming in faster. The focus so far is on how to be a better lie detector, commanding attention in a crisis (and one on one situations), and preserving the dignity of others regardless of whatever they have done. These are life lessons but they are also a perspective of better communication - learning to listen and learning to interpret what we hear and see better.

Becoming a human lie detector and reading body language well begins with being willing to see others in all of our human complexities. Don’t be so quick to put people in a box - no two people are exactly alike in their habits or behaviors. Every body expresses stress differently.

Chp 5: We do far greater harm by shielding our children rather than teaching them. You shouldn’t rely on others to learn how to protect themselves. Educate yourself and give that knowledge to your children in a way they can understand and use.Give them the resources and tools to protect themselves when you are not around.

There are times when I think this book isn’t intended to be read straight through, because at times it is repetitive.

Argument or reasoning based on religious morals and biblical definitions (interesting) is weak. I would rather have seen a more modern appeal.

Manganese is supposedly not good for you but lacks a solid argument.

Copper helps make Super Oxide Dismutase, which helps to detoxify everything.

Postpartum depression is probably caused by the amount of iodine and copper excreted to breastfeed or blocked by increased iron and zinc intake in supplements.

Drink more herbal tea vs black or green tea.

Fluoride binds to Copper and causes Copper deficiency. Iodine detoxes excess fluoride but so does increasing Copper and it is easier to regulate or consume in higher amounts. Iodine deficiency is also a Copper deficiency, a higher intake of Iodine requires a higher intake of Copper.

I needed to stop and sum up a few points.

Copper is the forgotten co-worker to many of our body’s processes and functions.

High consumption of Vit C, D, and Zinc shuts down our immune system (not sure about this) and at high levels blocks Copper absorption.

Copper deficiency found in the brains of those with Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and autism. Deficiency also directly related to diabetes.

I saw a colleague reading this and thought it might be interesting. I am listening to it as a form of mediation where it gives me a focal point and reminds me to relax and ground myself. And it's a guide to compassion, through the eyes of Pema, which lends perspective. My favorite teaching moment is the one with the colliding boats. You can't shout your way to safety, you can't control the other boat-you have to act.

I wasn't aware of the self esteem policies the author mentioned. I thought it was a recent thing so this "book/chapter" was eye opening. There were moments I dropped my jaw and others where I nodded in agreement.

Watched 'Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator' on Netflix about a week ago and the timing is perfect. Although I am disappointed that the book doesn't go beyond the rise of guru celebrities, the last couple paragraphs of Book 4 brings it all together. With very little finger pointing it answers the question, why do thousands flock (and pay) to transform themselves and their spirits?

This section on social pain, empathy, and moral outrage puts things in perspective. For me what is missing is here is what happens when people abuse this knowledge, manipulating empathy on purpose or inciting false moral outrage.

Thoughts: What happens if a person doesn't know what other people expect of them? What would they do?

What if people caught themselves doing the expected thing, and then decided or retrain themselves to not do those things? automatically??

A pure soul or true inner core doesn't exist. We are what we think other people think we are (Charles Horon Cooley).

Makes you rethink when someone claims to be authenticly real, when without realizing it you are actually attempting to live up to the expectations of what that looks like to other people. Behaving, dressing, and thinking to "get" the job or win approval.

This makes me sad.

Wow. The things we as humans will do to "transform."

"Our true thoughts and feelings shouldn't be repressed behind the old-fashioned curtain of 'manners'." He is describing the big ideas of the 1960's that have come prevalent today.

Book Four is unpacking the Western evolution of individualism. Whoa. I have never questioned where the extreme faith in belief cures and the prosperity gospel originated from. Interesting that therapist use a form of it successfully. *Healing formula = optimistic + trusting + judgement free zone. I have come the long way around to discover that on my own. Make sense. Brene Brown shines the light on our shame culture.

Leaning on the previous chapter, the prestige cues mentioned I feel are cultural conditioning.

I was expecting more on the impact and influence on religion, there is some of that here, but it seems the main point is that (1) we see other people as who we are. We are attracted to others because of what they say about us. (2) The ancient self transitioned to the modern shelf, based on self hatred and fear.

I'm finding the comparisons between cultures interesting. For example, all children up to a certain age draw similar pictures. And then they start to draw pictures more aligned to their culture's world view. I feel there is alot of truth to the idea we look to our environment to figure out who we are and who we want to be. But what if the environment is chaotic, toxic, or unstable?
