Note: I'm picking it up again after a couple of rough weeks due to family issues, and every time I have to put it down, it's an effort.

The horrors of reality overthrowing the paranormal ones:

"Facial paralysis. Stroke.
Xavier swiveled his head, found the parking lot at the end of the alleyway deserted. He needed someone's help, someone to stay with her and keep her head elevated while he ran to get the first aid kit in the office, the defibrillator that was probably expired by now—
Shit, no way this girl can afford an ambulance."

So beautifully and smartly written

Can horror be funny? Briana makes sure it is:

"Xavier'd never seen him. Neither had Desai. But they spoke the same language, so Desai got the property manager gig and promptly turned into a douchebag. Sure. That's how it always went. Money was a language, too."

"Payday loan offices turned to community centers turned to yoga studios and green juice shops. This was industry. Consumption and starvation, and consumption again, twice as hungry on the come around. Twice as urgent."

Such a moving scene with her father!

Sad, tense, terrifying in a very deep sense

Needed a thriller. Picked this one up, and I'm hooked.
