the "Our town" stories are pretty good, even providing a couple of twists.

Finished the two Army stories and the turps. Liked the Army stories but didn't care much for the turps as it seemed to try too hard to sound "ethnic."

So far the number one thing I've taken from this book is Frau Schroeder's He Was My Chief must be a very good book.

Finished the "Broadway" stories. These are some great tales. Now I'll work on the Turps. I've also found the annotation providing some background info on the stories to be very helpful.

Runyon was certainly good at the art of the short story. I'm really enjoying this book! Some politically-incorrect language but that's a plus as far as I'm concerned.

Did a lot of reading this weekend: The Lily of St. Pierre, The Bloodhounds of Broadway, "Gentlemen, the King," The brain Goes Home, The Snatching of Bookie Bob, Hold 'em Yale, For a Pal, Broadway Financier, Little Miss Marker, and Dream Street Rose. I can see Little Miss Marker making a good movie (three versions no less) but I'm surprised that "Gentlemen, the King" doesn't seem to have ever been made into one.

Read Lillian, Social Error, Blood Pressure, Butch Minds the Baby, and the Hottest Guy in the World. I love this type of humor!

I started reading these stories after hearing one of them on the Damon Runyon Theater. So far I've read Romance in the Roaring Forties, A Very Honorable Guy, Madame La Gimp and Dark Dolores. Very funny stuff!

Page 5: Discusses the fact that "Sarajevo is the capital of Serbia." Page 120 mentions how William Karl was king of Lithuania from October 9th through December 14th 1918... "a total of thirty-six days." I can get being bad at geography, but to be bad at math too?

Very interesting so far. Fascinating to see the reaction of an American to life in Africa, especially Somalia. Hard to put this book down.
