Bruce Catton was THE Civil War people's historian who made history accessible to all.

Rather than succumb to Herodotus's description of history as the stories of kings and battles, Catton brought life to his individual characters, made us feel who they were, spoke to us, and helped us understand this great American struggle.

Actually, this is my second reading of the book.

Written beautifully in a literary style not often seen nowadays in history writing. The chapter on Scandinavia was fascinating and clearly thoroughly researched. Often, this corner of Europe receives short shrift, but as a one-time resident, the places and names resonate for me.

Actually, it's my fourth time reading this book, the first time being in 7th grade.
