Analysis of era empires of the past could be enriched by Arnold Toynbee's A Study of History. I did not read the whole work, simply the Introduction which in my opinion should be required reading, specially in the United States where exceptionalism is prevalent.
Harari's perspective is not quite Toynbee's.

Starts with basic economics, supply, demand, marginal analysis.
I am know at chapters analyzing specific issues.
Interesting health in the USA -a life us worth 5 million; climate change, glacial age is retarded by man & natural global warming, plus, it is a process for the millenia, marginal effect of our activities. Pollution has greater impact in the short term- decades.
