I'm listening to this on audiobook, having read it before in print. The Goodreads system isn't sophisticated enough to be able to specify this. :)

This book had a fascinating blurb, started very promising, took a detour into the bizarre and confusing, and slowly built to the crescendo that I should have seen coming. I'm still deciding what my feelings are towards it, but that bizarre detour left a bad taste in my mouth; I'm thankful it improved. It's a very male book, and clearly an early work. Fascinating, though.

This was excellent. Like most, I read Steinbeck for English classes back in school. But I'm only now coming to appreciate him. The episodic "Tortilla Flat" caught my attention because he riffs on Arthurian legend in writing about a group of dirt-poor friends in the slums of Monterey. Though he gets in trouble today for not making them accurately Mexican, they're still outrageously funny and sympathetic characters.

My interest in cosmography and how it impacts ethics led me to pick up my first Platonic text. I'm not a Christian Platonist, but I can understand how Plato came to have such an impact on early Christian theology--even if I think it's wrong. :)
