Three thoughts keep coming to mind in reading these stories: 1. The old Tolstoy quote from Anna Karenina, "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in their own way" applies to almost every story here. 2. Many of these stories could serve as a prequel for Mad Men. 3. If an author writes what he knows, John Cheever must have known untold misery.
