“[Capitalist solutions to CC] deny the systemic interrelated nature of the problem: entire industrial complexes are involved, and ultimately it becomes a question of the expansion of the market itself. Ecological reform within the system like all other reforms, are limited because the moment they begin to address the fundamental nature of the system itself, they are quickly curtailed by vested interests.” So good

I'm DNFing this. This book strikes me less as "20 lessons on tyranny" and more of a "I'm going to spend 126 pages talking about how Trump IS Hitler," which is fine I guess, but I don't think that saying X President is Hitler is a useful or nuanced critique. We hear it every presidency. So yeah, in short: definitely better books about tyrannical regimes out there, I don't think this one is worth your time.

He's already compared communism to fascism and Nazism. Which if you're not aware: communist ideology is in DIRECT OPPOSITION to fascism. I don't really know how you can talk about the history of 20th century governments without understanding communism, so I hope he makes this clear later in the book!

This is my first N.K. Jemisin book. Already so, so good. I will definitely be picking up more of her books.

A time war between radical feminists fighting for women’s rights and a group of “men’s rights” travelers tries to undo it all. A war of ideas rather than violence, this book is amazing!!

This book is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I can’t remember the last time a book made me cry this hard.

I am absolutely floored by the end of this book. It was completely unexpected and heart-wrenching, but I respect Tamsyn Muir for writing that. It was a good ending for this book, a brave ending, and even though I feel heartbroken I can't wait to get my hands on the next book.

I've genuinely never read a book quite like this. Maria's rambling inner monologues about her dysphoria, her self-destructive tendencies, and gender are so relatable (painfully so sometimes). She's imperfect through and through but I can't help but enjoy every second with her. Add this to your tbr!

The mix of collage and poetry go hand-in-hand to make an incredibly compelling collection (and gallery as well, I suppose) come to life. I'm only halfway through but I highly highly recommend it already.

Amazing. This book tells the history of Indigenous resistance in the American west that is so often glossed over or told via outright lies in the American education system. It’s terrible that unlearning lies is something we have to do at all, but it is necessary and vital we do it. If you’d like to start unlearning the false settler colonial narrative you were fed as a child, this book is a good place to start.

Incredibly thorough and absolutely insane. Who needs reality TV if you can just read about cut-throat business ventures in Silicon Valley?

I wish this was a book I read in high school, specifically I wish I had read the chapters on jealousy and conflict earlier. They provide exercises and new frames of reference through which to observe, experience, and handle the variety emotions that arise in relationships. If it was normal to make required reading lists before entering into a relationship this would be the first one on mine.
