so I'm more than a third through the book now, and none of the characters have really had an emotional journey. none of them have even really had a reaction to being shipwrecked apart from being a bit scared in the first chapter, which makes for a very bland narrative.
I'm not sure their survival tips are that great either

I was familiar with the film, but I'm a little taken aback by the families utter delight in immediately shooting, killing and eating every new animal they cross paths with, from penguins to tigers, turtles to flamingos and everything in between, despite the shipwreck providing them with provisions of every possible kind...

Finally back to this after nearly a year! Packed it away when we moved house and only just uncovered it again

Hugo is a good writer but good heavens is he long winded.

I just read a 30 page account of the battle of Waterloo... The last paragraph was relevant to the story...

I cannot get into this book. None of the essays go deep enough into the subject to feel like they are worth the time it takes to read them

I've been making a reading list based on what Lewis recommends in his letters, its already over ten books long....

So, my husband challenged me to read this cover to cover. It's not going so well (I'm still on 'A'), but there are some fantastic words in here. The best so far? 'Abecedarian, An - A teacher or learner of the ABC or rudiments', I shall now be referrinng to all nursery school children in this way! I do feel it should be Abacadarian though - for poetic reasons.
