Did not like as much as Queen Victoria's Granddaughters. Probably because of all the talk about wars and the military, which doesn't interest me

The book deals with a black man named Fred Daniels, and is set in the 1940sn He is walking home at night and is picked up by white police officers. They beat and torture him into signing a confession. Tbey drive him and his wife to hospital, and while she is in labor, he escapes into a manhole
. The officers search for him and find him, Lawson shoots and kills Damiels for no good reason

This is one of the saddest and most depressing books I have ever read. The poverty is beyond my understanding. McCourt needed a foot up his behind! Selfish, lazy, alcoholic, neer do well. Disgusting human being he was!

Didn't like it. The author used articles from the papers to tell the story of these murders. Information was included that was unneccessary. I knew about Nathan Elgin, but he was not mentioned until 3 quarters into the book.
