Micah is 35% done with Empire of Grass (The Last King of Osten Ard, #2)
So far the sections with Morgan are near unreadable, same with the talon, same with the slave woman. Simon is fine but bordering on annoying. The queen is fine but the intriguing around her is tiresome. The horse people are annoying too. This feels like a middle book in an epic fantasy series and is a slog to get through.

This appears to be a book that goes against it's own mission statement??? And the author is insufferable.

I forgot how much fun it is jumping into a series after it's already started.

I find the storytelling choice here interesting. It does feel a bit. . .like it's definitely written for white people? Like, it goes classic Idi Amin full title, but doesn't spend a single second on the colonialism that lead to a situation where he could even get to power. It even mentions that he ate people, which is rumor at best. Its written in a way to super horrify white people in a titillating sort of way.

This book is pretty good. It's also very long. Very heavy to hold for a long time. Have to read it at a table.

This book is a testament to knowing your audience. The story of King Leopold in colonial Africa is devastating. It's as horrible a time in history as there is. He's one of the worst humans to ever live. So a story in this time period could be gross as to be unreadable. But Nisi is clearly writing to an audience who knows how bad it was and doesn't need to relive that trauma. The books I better for it to this point.

I admit I wasn't feeling this book as much about 200 pages into it. I thought I really wasn't going to like this book at all by 400+ pages. Sometimes when you're reading a super long book you have to just keep reading the book. I'm not sure I'll love it, but we're in much better place now. I feel like I have an actual grasp on things.

Okay, she's defending the Spanish Inquisition. And of course everything muslims do is much scarier. No more of this book.

I'm not sure how much farther through this book I'm going to be able to get. The book is so blatantly racist I don't even understand. Like, it super magnifies everything bad done by any muslim ruler at the time and minimizes the horrors of the christians. It talks about the muslims taking people into slavery like christopher columbus wasn't in Isabella's court. It's a shitshow

it's gotten worse. refers to the slave trade as the age of exploration. and finds a way to absolve europe of much wrong doing. And it's doing the same thing with native american genocide.

what the fuck?! Louisville has NBA players. Pitino has been a good recruiter and has lots of good players. And this book is like "pitino can only do what he does because his players aren't any good." that's actually not true. at all. ugh.

Fucking hell. And he tells the story of fordham vs umass in explicity racist ways. Talking about the much harder working irish kids versus the naturally skilled (and thus clearly not hard working) black Dr. J. Seriously. He just talks about how much harder inner city white kids work than black people with no hint of consciousness.

eh. This is kinda boring. I'm bored to death of the redwood girls basketball story. It's actually inaccurate and does what the book says it isn't supposed to do and ignores all the advantages that team actually had. Which is unlimited money, a good gym to practice in, and practice time. That particular story is a massive pet peeve of mine.
