When the Oba, king of Benin, tried to stop trade with Europeans, the British sent a diplomatic mission to assert their “right” to trade. Benin soldiers attacked, and Britain used this as a pretext to invade. troops entered the capital, deposed the king and killed hundreds, founding the British Niger Coast Protectorate.
