I really should read some books about Germany that DON'T take place during WWII.

I was homesick for Taiwan and having a very hard time adjusting to Germany, so I decided to read this book recommended to me a long time ago by a friend from Taiwan without having any idea what it was about, just as a distraction and a way to feel closer to a friend who's far away. The book is about a family who moves to Nazi Germany during World War II. Seriously?

Anyone have ideas for either: a great drama to read with an 8th grade class, or a novel for a 6th grade class? Teaching some new courses this year and putting together syllabi....

Ten years ago I reread this book during my first few days of living in London....yesterday it was all I felt like reading during my first night in Germany.

I'm deciding on the perfect gift for a friend (who I know partly through a feminist book club) who's having a baby. I want to get her a feminist themed book for her baby girl. Any suggestions? I don't know much about literature for kids younger than middle school!

I have been trying for YEARS to find a copy of The World's Wife by Carol Ann Duffy. If anyone has any clue how to get one, please let me know! It's not available on Kindle outside of specific regions.

I give up. This is the second time in the past year I've refused to finish a book. I promised my sister I'd check this out, but I didn't promise to read all 800 freaking pages.

There's never been any physical description of a male character, but this guy can't write a sentence about a woman without talking in detail about how gorgeous she is. There's an entirely pointless flashback where a women blindfolds the main character, takes him to her apartment, and fulfills all his sexual fantasies. Nothing screams "this was written by a clueless man" more than that.

I know Tenzin Palmo is criticising this feminist Buddhist woman for writing about how women should be angry about patriarchy, but I really want to know who this unnamed author is. Applying Buddhist philosophy to feminism/activism is something I'm hugely interested in and haven't seen addressed in any texts so far. If anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears.

Reading this and probably quite a few other YA dystopias in an attempt to find a few modern dystopian novels for a 7th and 8th grade elective. I would love suggestions!
