rereading this because the author has recently gotten her autism diagnosis and I feel like I will be able to see a lot of this with different eyes now

There was one moment where I caught myself thinking that the main character surely must be white as he is a cop and thinking some pretty awful thoughts but he was actually black. I'm not sure however that I completely understood why it was done and more importantly the overall message with the way the ending was handled.
