Might be too boring... And also I'm already thrown by a sentence early on that was like "the last breath was kicked out of his body... He was afraid it was going to be his last breath".

I figure if I want to read Demon Copperhead, I better start with the inspiration?

Matthew is finished with The Year of Magical Thinking
I have to say, I'm not entirely sure what her magical thinking was, but the book was fantastic. This is my first Didion, and she certainly didn't disappoint.

Matthew is starting Let's Not Do That Again
Fun Easter eggs throughout, silly villain, interesting thoughts on morality and relationships, but overall forgettable

Matthew is starting A People’s History of the United States: 1492 - Present
"The US is a middle-class society governed, for the most part, by its upper classes. Those upper classes, to rule, needed to make concessions to the middle class, without damage to its own wealth or power, at the expense of slaves, indians, and poor whites. This bought loyalty." - Richard Hoffstadter

The more I learn about our nation, the more I understand how racism isn't inevitable or natural: it was carefully cultivated to protect capitalist interests.

Matthew is starting A Woman Is No Man
Similarity to Harry Potter when she receives that letter. Life of dullness and servitude, but for her there is no escape to a magical land because her slavery is her gender.

I’m not getting a strong feel for Frank’s personality yet. He shines through more clearly in second person in the Likeness.

Main takeaway thus far: good guys have good complexions, bad guys have bad complexions.

Matthew is starting The Sparrow (The Sparrow, #1)
The nonlinear/flashback organization is very well done. I the backward, forward reveal of details that fills the story in patches.
I also love the deft prose and language; conversations move quickly and sometimes I’m not sure what they’re talking about, but if I reread or think about it, I get it and then I feel clever and love the cleverness of the characters.

Matthew is finished with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter, #5)
At least 3/4 of this book are Harry, Ron, and Hermione conversing. I'm not complaining, mind you, but once I noticed it, I am astounded to see that practically the entirety of the plot happens as they sit around and talk.

Caveat - my roommate edited the copy I am reading - so I can't endorse the regular version...

I'm a little into it but I'm having a hard time with the new setting and plot. I just want more Mistborn! It seems like several of the aspects of this new world are quite similar :s

slow going. I'm not sure if I can take this plain yet foreshadowed style of writing about a series of seemingly unconnected middle eastern adventures for another 200 pages
