Will Ansbacher is starting Upheaval: Turning Points for Nations in Crisis (Civilizations Rise and Fall, #3)
Strange feeling to be reading this during the USA's current Upheaval.
Strange because -- if you can get beyond the muddled and awkward metaphor of personal crisis for national upheaval to a half-buried truth -- Diamond actually predicted this.

Oh Goodreads, I love your commitment to Can-con, but Pooh's connection to Winnipeg is very tenuous!

Will Ansbacher is on page 282 of 525 of The World of Yesterday
"It was the same everywhere...everything was just as it had been, or even better - the war was buried. The war was over.

But it was not over. We just didn't know it. In our innocent gullibility, we were all deceived, confusing our personal friendly feelings with those of the world. Not that there was any need for us to be ashamed of our mistake, since the politicians, economists and bankers were equally deceived."

I hate you, Kobo! You lost all my notes and highlights from The World of Yesterday.
One more trick like that and I'm going back to real books and a pencil!

"But we still did not notice the danger. Those few writers who had really gone to the trouble of reading Hitler's book did not look seriously at his programme but laughed at his pompous prose style instead. ... it was unthinkable for the Germans to contemplate a man who had not even left school with any qualifications ... could aspire to the kind of position that had been held by von Stein, Bismarck and Prince Bulow"

I think I'm going to start adding kids' books to GR. Why not? I read way more of them than I do from my "to-read" list!

First read about 15 years ago, but I just saw the film (which was excellent) and want to compare. I don't remember being overwhelmed by the book.
