The repetition and flat prose may have been a translation issue, but I found it tedious. You can tell that this book used to be a play.

The book is also pretty conservative. The main theme is women sacrificing themselves for others.

This just wasn't for me.

Ten chapters in and we're finally heading to Thornfield Hall!

I enjoy the gothic atmosphere. there just too much phrenology-like stuff for me.

Period-typical beliefs, I know, but it is unpleasant reading.

The last two stories – The Salt Miracles by Natasha Pulley and Banished by Elizabeth Macneal –have been the best so far.

Kat Boleyn is such an interesting character in concept. On page she is so wet and passive and annoying.

I was a third of the way through the book before it got good.

I did eventually enjoy it, but I white-knuckled my way through at least a hundred pages. Which is a lot to ask of a reader.
