So far: contradicting and not helpful. Might finish, might not. I have never heard of this book until I found it by browsing here on GR. I am interested in the criticism and effect it might have had since its 1972 publication.

"Stop implanting your oversized worries in their heads. Stop flinging the word "bullying" around just because another girl said something mean to your daughter; that's an unpleasantness she's destined to face again and must learn to hurdle. Stop monitoring and evaluating everything your kids do and stop overpraising them for doing things that aren't hard."

Very dense ideas and history but magnetic writing style that is a joy to hold in my hands. Can't quite put my finger on it as I don't feel smart enough to explain the ideas back. But I really do like the writing.

Why am I still listening to this? Because I'm doing my library's summer reading program, I got 8 hours into it while I was painting a room one day, and the narrator has a sophisticated British accent. That's about it. Only another 6 hours of the 19-hour-long audiobook to go... 💪

A few chapters ago, I randomly asked my boys one of the classic RAR questions: "who's the bravest character right now?" I was totally expecting them to say Ralph. But no, they both emphatically said: "Mother! Definitely Mother! Can you imagine?" I was taken aback by this and enjoyed the discussion. What a blessing these conversations have been! Each chapter we read gives much talk between us.
