Lanette Sweeney is 60% done with Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood
I get most of my books from the library. I hate ebooks but that is the only format in which I've been able to find this one, so I keep having to go back and check it out again trying to finish it. Even though I hate this format, the book is so good, filled with laugh-out-loud humor while ensuring we all understand how torturous Apartheid was. Last night I read a chapter aloud to my wife, our best laugh of the day.

I am working my way slowly through this important book, reading just a few pages a day while I continue reading novels. Each incident of torture or murder inflicted by American whites on Black bodies must be digested slowly; it would feel wrong to skim through them. Our history is so painful; I can't understand how any of my fellow whites can imagine our country is free of racism...

I am LOVING this book about relationships of all kinds: between children and caregivers, between lovers and friends, across races and within them. The book is so much fun to listen to and the plot is so tautly woven, slowly closing around us, and yet so thought-provoking.
