I walked away from this book. There were aspects that really resonated, since I'm also a survivor of a traumatized mother who lived through a war. But the author would spend large amounts of time writing down her imaginings of terrible things that happened to her mother - even though her mother insisted they never happened. It became off-putting and I just had to put the book down.

I need to get back into this. I picked up the book after hearing the author on a radio show. However, the writing doesn't engage me. The author uses swear words for no apparent reason, just to seem tough perhaps. I'm not a prude. The writing just isn't engaging.

My library loan ended, but I've requested the novel again so I can finish it. The story and setting are enjoyable, but it doesn't grab me like Martha Wells' "Murderbot Dairies" series.
