I was in the mood to read a historical romance with a courtesan as the leading lady so here we are. While this technically fits the bill, it’s a little less Satine and more Fantine than I hoped.

“Go to hell”
“I already exist on a level of hell.”
“Exist on one that isn't near mine.”

Obsessed with the line: ”She is the Madonna of the disaffected”

I am so obsessed with Angela Carter’s writing. So lush and atmospheric and ever so slightly off kilter.

Only the slightest whiff of romance brewing at the nearly halfway mark. Contemporary “slow burn” authors take note!
