Urban fantasy books are always delightful. This book manages to evade the cliche corniness of this genre. The Oxford setting is nostalgic for me, and the main characters all being academics really grounds this book in the modern day, connecting past with present. So good so far!

While an improvement from how the Games treated tributes in ABOSAS, it is still very apparent how much of a disadvantage the District 12 kids have. We see the Capitol struggle more to maintain control. This book is more chaotic and messy than THG

Non-spoiler summery of what I’ve read so far: wow that’s depressing, yess that’s poverty all right, you’re a good son, omg their love is so healthy and wholesome, are her uncles gay?, omg there’s a shit ton of Easter eggs, did that really just happen, wow that woman is a cunt, stfu Lenore Dove, media and truth vs fabrication, oh to be lovesick teens screaming from train tracks ❤️✌️

What a strong, solid start to a book. I’m amazed at Suzanne Collins, who continues to enrich her fictional universe, somehow making the hunger games even worse than we’ve ever seen them before.

I freakin love it so far

Definitely worth the hype. Plath’s writing is sharp, yet dreamy. Esther’s anxieties, struggles, and inner thoughts make me feel seen. She’s just a girl, in “the world”—1950s America, which doesn’t seem too far off from 2020s America—and this book is her reconciling those two facts. I’m really enjoying this so far ❤️

Esther’s voice and narrative is erratic, but in a good way? Chapters start off one way, but then Esther remembers something from her past and the memory takes hold of the narrative.

Just finished ch 2. The main character’s mind is a wacky place
