Kate Gompert feels so real and her pain is so clear, and hard to look at.

This year, I keep my “Want to Read” list clean. No new books until the old ones are gone.
When I add a book, it must earn its place. I write down who told me about it. I note why I liked the cover art. I remember when I first heard its name. I say why I want to read it.

my thoughts have merged with the book, and I can’t separate them. I still want to keep my own.

I’ve lost sense of the plot and I’m just enjoying the sentences.

I’m going to read this book twice in the end. I read a paragraph, then go back to the beginning of it. The first time, the story moves past me like weather. Names. Events.

I go back. I read again. Sentences show their teeth.

I read so I can re-read.

I’m just starting, and I feel it’s not going to be love or hate toward the book. It’s a hate-for-love kind of book.

Literally, the first 25% of the book is perfect — not just for this story, but for any story in any genre. This one is about love.

I write because I have nothing to say.

This book could make you a fan of tuberculosis. I don’t fully understand the ethics of disease, or what specific emotion is stirred by the knowledge of something deadly. But I feel like a child who cannot take his eyes off a catastrophe
