I remember now why I didn’t care for this book. At 75% of the way through, I am wanting the story to move forward a little more quickly. The father character is awful, but through his journals, we are to trudge through the weeds of his psychosis. The book is about Maude, his daughter, the character I care about the most.

I read this years ago. Trying it again.

Really clever stories

I’m not sure about the accuracy of the prehistoric people Follett is writing about. But in this case I’m not sure it even matters. The story thus far is quite good, characters and village life interesting. I’m considering this fantasy with historic elements that I assume he built around, although quite minimal. A fun read so far.

This book is a lot more depressing than I expected. Grim. Not sure I’ll finish it.

Fantastic so far

It really doesn’t get going until they actually get to the Udolfo Castle. Regardless, I understand why this book was wildly popular with young women, as it is a terrible predicament.

The first ten chapters are ROUGH… the actual story kicks in there. Lordy
