here's my problem with this book and it's that so few of the stories dig deeper into the horror than "oh no a big insect". like what are you SAYING with the big insect!!!

just finished the margaret mead chapter and i still don't know if i actually like this book

the intrigue is BUILDING and i am THEORISING. inside me there is a corkboard with red string and notes like "surit being set up????" pinned to it

i feel like my internal organs are being slowly pressed through a fine mesh sieve. and im loving it!

not jiving with this one as much as i was with weird woods... i think maybe insect horror has to be on screen to get to me (ref. the cockroach bit in creepshow that made me want to die)

okay nora i love your work but did you have to wait until literally 70% in to introduce the revenge obsessed serial killer you TITLED THE BOOK AFTER? also where are the uncles on the page. i miss them

opened this up to read it for the first time since i was about seven and i had a pleasant thrill at seeing garth nix's signature to me. i remember being very happy he spelled my name right and he said he knew his shakespeare! first time i'd heard there was a rosalind in the shakespearean canon and now im non binary. its all coming together

3. didn't get the horror element but the setting description and language were really evocative. maybe i just like birds too much to fear their presence
4. this was cool! felt very bad for the cat and also, actually, the human characters! loved the medieval angle for the torso mouth guy

this page count is a guess, i just want to document my #thoughts on each short story

1. i liked the framing as a kind of cassandrian vision of a hideous future, but it didn't actually scare me that much
2. this was just a magnus archives statement that, for once, ended with the guy making a good decision. big fan of him learning to love and appreciate his wife (both first two stories were wife guy povs)
